11th International Post-Combustion CO2 Capture Network

March 2008 Newsletter articles

Until recently post combustion capture of CO2 has languished behind IGCC and oxyfuel in terms of exciting announcements about demonstration projects. This has all changed in recent months. First there was the UK Government announcement in November that they would support a post-combustion demonstration on a coal-fired station at a minimum of 300 MWe and then in February it was learned that Vattenfall are investigating retrofitting a similar sized unit to the coal-fired Nordjyllands No 3 unit in Denmark, with a view to implementation in 2010. The good news about this project is that a suitable nearby aquifer for the CO2 storage seems to have been identified.

This all adds purpose to IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D programme’s research network on the topic which is co-ordinated for them by John Topper,  Managing Director of IEA CCC.
The next meeting has an even stronger IEA Clean Coal Centre connection as it is being hosted by Dr Adolf Aumüller of EVN in Vienna, Austria on 20-21 May 2008. Adolf is Chairman of the IEA Clean Coal Centre’s Executive Committee. Details of the meeting can be found through the following link. Those working on or strongly connected to the topic are invited to apply for a place in the meeting.
