IEA Environmental Projects Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary company of International Mining Consultants (Group Holdings) Limited) and is the Operating Agent (or administrative arm) for two non-profit making international collaborative projects concerned with fossil fuels.
The IEA Clean Coal Centre has traditionally provided information on all aspects of coal production, markets and utilisation. Given increasing environmental pressures, its work programme concentrates ever more on environmental mitigation of emissions and co-firing with greenhouse friendly fuels. It was established in 1975 and has a permanent staff of 25 people based in South West London. It provides a series of well-respected reports, databases, an abstracting service and its staff are available to members for consultation as required.
The IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme was established in 1991. In addition to its member states it has a significant number of industrial sponsors. In the first 10 years of its programme its focus has been on techno-economic studies on options for capture, transport and disposal of carbon dioxide. It has also undertaken studies on other greenhouse gases such as methane and comparisons with some renewable forms of energy production. Increasingly, it is becoming involved in practical R & D programmes. The small programme management team is based near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It out-sources most of its studies.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an organisation established in the early 1970's by OECD countries with headquarters in Paris. Under the auspices of the IEA over 40 Implementing Agreements have been established to undertake energy R & D or provide information services. These are supported by individual member states according to their interests. Some operate on a task sharing basis and some on a subscription basis to support a full time staff. Each Implementing Agreement has an Executive Committee, drawn from its members, and responsible for overseeing activities. There is also an Operating Agent appointed by the Executive Committee, which is responsible for administration of the particular programme.
